Of Apple Pie and

Fourth of July!

It's the fourth of July weekend - we are celebrating Independence Day, enjoying liberty, and the pursuit of happiness among the many great gifts given to us.

As a 3-year-old citizen, I now fully appreciate one of the great benefits in the United States of America - our freedom of speech, which has been won at a great price.

Yes, this freedom of expression starts young! How many times have you been at the store or even at church when a 3-year-old has a meltdown

with kicking and screaming? Then at the top of their voice, we hear them say, “No!” You often feel sorry for the poor parents. It seems that the whole experience of growing up, parenting and the entire rough and tumble of family life is a reality that is stressful and not too joyful. Unless God has granted you the gift of patience and an incredible sense of irony and humor!

We dearly love our kids, but in the tiredness of the early evening, our kids can try the patience of a saint! God help us when they hit the teenage years. There goes that door slamming again! You’re grounded! It’s not fair! Other kids’ moms allow them, why can’t I? See if I care. I hate you!

Indeed, family life has turned many a head of hair grey! Speaking of grey hair, on the other side of the spectrum, there are the grown adults with aging parents. Here we may be taking throw rugs away or making the home safe so that our moms or dads don’t trip or fall. We may be taking them to medical appointments as their lifelong experience of independence flitters away.

Independence is truly a gift from God. May our experience of the living Word help others draw closer to him so that they may experience true freedom in Christ. As we continue along the road may this freedom lead others to discover, live and share Jesus!

Forever and aye,

Fr. Mack
