Blest is the One Who Trusts in the Lord - February 17, 2019

When I pray on Sunday mornings, I try to give God a Sabbath from all my usual asking and pleading. Instead I resolved years ago that, on Sundays, I would limit my prayers to praise and thanksgiving. After all, Eucharist means Thanksgiving. Besides, God hears plenty about my needs and requests from Monday through Saturday.

Each Sunday has become an opportunity to count my blessings. I am always surprised how hard this is even though I have been tremendously blessed. I have a terrific wife and family, loyal friends, employment which I love and enough money to cover my bills. I am comfortable in my home and neighborhood. I am in good health and, most of the time, the Sun is shining. So why don’t my prayers on Sunday last as long as my weekday requests?

We do not count blessings as often as we tabulate the curses of living. While I manage to comprise a paragraph of thank-you weekly, every day I produce many more complaints and requests. Maybe, if I didn’t spend only one day weekly listing my blessings, I could become better at it.

This Sunday, let us resolve to thank God for all of our blessings and let us all be a blessing to each other.
