Happy Feast Day and Merry Christmas! - December 30, 2018
Jun 13, 2019
I was at a fun staff Christmas lunch the week before Christmas. Fr. Don hosted and emceed an amazing party, and everyone had a great time. We had a gift exchange, the kind where you can steal others’ gifts, and there were lots of additional twists. If we could answer a given question, we would receive a special “just because” gift from Fr. Don. Here was my question from Fr. Don: “Deacon Bruce, when is the Feast of St. Stephen?” For those of you who don’t know, the answer is December 26th, the day after Christmas. If you’ll recall, Stephen was a deacon who was stoned and martyred for his faith. As I stood up in front of everyone, I could not come up with the answer. Being a deacon, I should have automatically been an expert on St. Stephen but, sadly, I was not. Because Fr. Don is a merciful boss, he gave me a second easier question so I could gather up my special “just because” gift. Never again will I forget my deacon Feast Day. Sorry, St. Stephen. Thanks for being a great role model for us.
In addition to the Feast of St. Stephen, deacon and martyr, we kicked off the beginning of the Christmas Season, so please continue to say “Merry Christmas.” And, today, we continue this joyous season by celebrating the wonderful Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. I hope every family has some symbol of Jesus, Mary and Joseph in their home.
May God bless our families, young and old, for they are the foundation of a strong society. Let us support our families in every possible way. Here is a nice prayer from the Missionaries of the Holy Family for all of us to recite on this holy day and every day.
JESUS, Son of God and Son of Mary, bless our family. Graciously inspire in us the unity, peace, and mutual love that you found in your own family in the little town of Nazareth.
MARY, Mother of Jesus and Our Mother, nourish our family with your faith and your love. Keep us close to your Son, Jesus, in all our sorrows and joys.
JOSEPH, Foster-father to Jesus, guardian and spouse of Mary, keep our family safe from harm. Help us in all times of discouragement or anxiety.
HOLY FAMILY OF NAZARETH, make our family one with you. Help us to be instruments of peace. Grant that love, strengthened by grace, may prove mightier than all the weaknesses and trials through which our families sometimes pass. May we always have God at the center of our hearts and homes until we are all one family, happy and at peace in our true home with you. Amen.
So, Merry Christmas to everyone in Kaukauna and throughout the entire world! And happy Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph! We are so blessed with all of these wonderful Church feasts to celebrate. And, by the way, remember that the Feast of St. Stephen, bishop and martyr, is December 26th, the day after Christmas. Because of his faith and courage he, too, set the pace for all of us to do the same, to become intentional disciples.
